Punjab Expands Electric Bus Network – New Routes, Cities & Timings Announced

Punjab’s Electric Bus Expansion 2026 Update

The Government of Punjab, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has launched a major expansion of the electric bus network to modernize public transport and protect the environment. This initiative is part of Punjab’s long-term vision to introduce clean, affordable, and reliable transport solutions for daily commuters across urban and semi-urban areas.

The electric bus project is being implemented in phases so that infrastructure, depots, and routes are properly developed before full-scale operations. With rising traffic congestion and air pollution, electric buses offer a sustainable alternative that benefits both passengers and the environment while improving the overall quality of public transport in the province.

New Cities Added to the Electric Bus Network

Punjab’s electric bus service is no longer limited to one or two major cities. The network has already expanded to multiple districts, ensuring that modern transport facilities reach a wider population. Currently, electric buses are operational in the following districts:

  • Lahore
  • Wazirabad
  • Muzaffargarh
  • Dera Ghazi Khan
  • Sahiwal
  • Sargodha
  • Mianwali
  • Islamabad
  • Rawalpindi
  • Gujar Khan

In addition to these cities, a new and important intercity route has been approved for 2026. Electric buses will soon connect Gujar Khan with Rawalpindi and Islamabad, providing a direct, eco-friendly travel option for commuters who travel daily for work, education, or healthcare. This expansion reflects the government’s focus on improving connectivity beyond city centers.

Updated Routes & Stop Locations Explained

One of the most significant updates in the electric bus project is the approval of new routes, especially the Gujar Khan to Islamabad route. Under this plan, 15 electric buses will operate between Gujar Khan Adda and T-Chowk, Islamabad, passing through Mandra via G.T. Road. The buses will return along the same route, ensuring consistent and reliable service.

Within Rawalpindi city, the government is also preparing additional routes. After the remodeling of Kutchery Chowk, six new routes will become operational, increasing coverage across key areas of the city. Dedicated electric bus stops are being developed along these routes, equipped with facilities such as water coolers, fans, and mini canteens to improve passenger comfort.

Electric Bus Timings & Service Frequency

Electric bus services are designed to meet the needs of daily commuters by offering regular and predictable schedules. While exact timings may vary by route and city, buses are expected to operate from early morning until late evening to accommodate office workers, students, and other travelers.

Service frequency will be higher during peak hours to reduce waiting time and overcrowding. With GPS tracking installed in all buses, authorities can monitor schedules in real time, helping ensure punctuality and smooth operations. As more buses are added to the fleet, service intervals are expected to improve further.

Fare Structure & Ticketing Method

The Punjab government has introduced a highly subsidized fare structure to make electric bus travel affordable for everyone. A flat fare of Rs. 20 per ride has been set for the general public, making it one of the most economical transport options available.

Special concessions are also part of this initiative:

  • Free travel for senior citizens
  • Free travel for students
  • Free travel for differently-abled individuals

Ticketing is kept simple to encourage usage, and the low fare policy ensures that people from all income groups can benefit from clean and modern public transport without financial burden.

What This Expansion Means for Daily Commuters

The expansion of Punjab’s electric bus network brings multiple benefits for daily commuters. Affordable fares, improved connectivity, and comfortable buses make everyday travel easier and more reliable. For residents of areas like Gujar Khan, the new route offers direct access to Rawalpindi and Islamabad without depending on private transport.

Key benefits for commuters include:

  • Reduced travel costs due to subsidized fares
  • Less travel time with direct and reliable routes
  • Cleaner and quieter journeys compared to fuel-based buses
  • Improved access to jobs, education, and healthcare

Beyond commuter convenience, the project also has a strong environmental and economic impact. Electric buses reduce air and noise pollution, lower fuel imports, and decrease long-term operating costs. With a planned fleet of 1,500 electric buses across Punjab, this initiative is expected to transform public transport and set a strong example for sustainable mobility in Pakistan.
